A port city in southern Hokkaido, Hakodate is home to its share of quaint attractions - from it's red brick buildings, to its vintage tram network, and perhaps most recognizably, its star-shaped citadel of Goryokaku. All veritable draws for tourists - but what do the locals get up to? Travel Hakodate offers a glimpse at a night out at two of the city's many "Snack“ bars. Unlike snackbars as we know them in North America, Japanese Snack bars are bars headed by a hostess or "Mama" - offering conversation, karaoke, and all-around hospitality to their guests.
