The 6th edition of the UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism has officially announced that the next forum will be held in Nara in June 2022.
According to UNWTO's Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness (CTC), Gastronomy Tourism is defined as "a type of tourism activity which is characterized by the visitor’s experience linked with food and related products and activities while travelling. Along with authentic, traditional, and/or innovative culinary experiences, Gastronomy Tourism may also involve other related activities such as visiting local producers, participating in food festivals and attending cooking classes." It not only supports local traditions and diversity, but contributes to the dissemination of culture, the development of local economies, and the realization of sustainable tourism.
Nara is known as the political and religious heart of ancient Japan and has shrines and temples that are among Japan's oldest. It is also considered the birthplace of refined Japanese sake and is a popular destination for visiting historical sake breweries.
