The Annual Sendai Tanabata Festival Returns from August 6 to 8!


The annual Sendai Tanabata Festival will be held again this year from August 6 to 8!

This event is the largest Tanabata Festival in Japan, with many Tanabata decorations set up around the shopping arcade that runs from in front of Sendai Station.
 

Though there are many festivites surrounding this event, the highlight of the festival is the gorgeous Tanabata decorations themselves, with streamers that can be as long as four metres! One of the customs associatied with the festival is a decoration contest during the festival. For those who are intrigued, the rules are are as follows:

1) they must be made of Japanese paper

2) they must be gorgeous!

3) a set of five streamers must be displayed

4) new decorations must be displayed every year, and...

5) seven decorations including streamers must be displayed



In fact, a Tanabata decoration contest is also held during the festivities, it's recommended to try walking around the area looking for the winning works and your favorite types of decorations!
