Rejuvenate Your Senses on the Spectacular Oki Islands
Decompress while tuning into the rhythm of the waves, trees and rocks on this remote corner of Japan
Surround yourself with dramatic cliffs, rolling hillsides and wild seascapes at Entô, a luxury hotel in Shimane Prefecture’s Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark. Located on Nakanoshima, an island in the Sea of Japan, Entô is at least 2 hours 40 minutes from Tokyo but the remoteness is part of its charm. Here you can fully decompress as you contemplate the rugged beauty of the Dozen caldera on this chain of islands formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago.
Entô consists of two parts: the original Entô BASE hotel from 1994 and the newer Entô Annex NEST which opened in 2021. All 36 rooms have sea views, and some accommodations have private terraces. The design here is simple and minimalist, fusing Western and Japanese elements and encouraging you to focus on the unspoiled natural surroundings.
The hotel offers various activities to help visitors enjoy the Geopark ranging from light walking tours to packrafting, aquatic exploration, and e-bike rentals. Exploring the natural wonders of the islands is the perfect way to build up an appetite. If you love local food, Entô is a locavore’s oasis. Dining options here feature local delicacies and seasonal ingredients produced by islanders or the hotel’s own staff. Treat yourself to Oki beef, hondawara seaweed, rock oysters, and fukugi-cha, which is made from the spicewood tree.
Access: Fly from Osaka Itami Airport to Oki Global Geopark. Then take the bus to Saigo Port Ferry Terminal (about 10 minutes), and the fast boat to Hishiura Port Ferry Terminal (about 30 minutes).
