Hokkaido - Saving Lives

Hokkaido Summer Bliss: Exploring Japan’s Scenic Wonderland

Sharma Daisey - Malaysia

Japan is a fascinating country, where traditional customs blend seamlessly with modern life. But for me, Hokkaido has always been the place I dreamed of visiting. That dream came true in early summer, in June. The journey unveiled distinct facets of Hokkaido, flourishing, green, and brimming with life.

As part of my visit, I explored one of the main themes of the 2025 International Exposition, “Saving Lives,” and experienced how communities preserve and coexist with nature through sustainable tourism, while discovering the healing power of pristine landscapes.

One highlight was the Bear Park, where I had the opportunity to see bears up close. I also visited Lake Shikotsu, Farm Tomita, the Blue Pond, and Lake Akan . Each place was beautiful and special in its own way.

Ussuri Brown Bear, the king of Hokkaido’s forests

From New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, it took around 1.5 hours by car to reach Noboribetsu. The journey itself was smooth and filled with scenic views of Hokkaido’s lush summer landscapes. To get to the bear park, I rode a cable car up the mountain, and at the top, I had the chance to view the Ussuri brown bear from a close distance. Watching them eat, play, and interact in a natural-style environment was a memorable experience. There was also a bear museum and a small souvenir shop. The whole place had a peaceful mountain atmosphere, perfect for a slow-paced visit.

Hell Valley, a hot and steamy volcanic land

After visiting Noboribetsu Bear Park, I stopped at Hell Valley to see one of Hokkaido’s active volcanoes. It’s part of Shikotsu–Tōya National Park, filled with steaming vents and bubbling hot springs.

Next, I headed to Lake Shikotsu, where the water is so clear it reflects the sky like a mirror. I highly recommend trying the Swan Boat ride – a relaxing and fun way to enjoy the peaceful views. Whether you're there to take photos, enjoy the calm, or simply float across the water, Lake Shikotsu is a perfect early summer escape.

Lake Shikotsu, a mirror of nature

In the evening, I strolled through the vibrant streets of Sapporo, sampling local cuisine, admiring the neon lights, and visiting energetic izakayas (Japanese-style pubs). The next morning, I went to see the famous Clock Tower in Sapporo. After that, I visited the observation deck at the Sapporo City Hall. It’s on the 19th floor and gives a beautiful view of the city. The best part is that there's no entrance fee, and it's very peaceful. This is one of the hidden treasures in Sapporo. So, if you find yourself in Sapporo, be sure to visit this place.

Tomita Farm, a blooming haven

My journey to Furano took about three hours by road, offering scenic views of the changing landscape along the way. Upon arriving at Tomita Farm, I was greeted by vibrant fields of flowers. Although the lavender was only beginning to bloom, the poppies and lupines were already in full color. With a gentle breeze and clear sky, the atmosphere felt calm and refreshing. Tomita Farm isn’t just a paradise for photographers; it’s also a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the moment.

Just a short drive away, I arrived at the Blue Pond, known for its striking, surreal color. The water was a bright, milky turquoise that shifted with the light and weather. With bare white trees rising from the still surface, the scene felt peaceful and almost unreal.

The Blue Pond is nature’s mysterious canvas

The following day, my journey progressed to Lake Akan, a serene and picturesque location deeply connected to the Ainu people, the Indigenous community of Hokkaido. In the nearby  Ainu Kotan village, I had the opportunity to learn about their distinctive culture, observe a traditional dance known as "Dancing Under the Full Moon," which is truly exceptional. In the evening, I joined Kamuy Lumina, an enchanting forest walk brought to life with lights and sounds that narrate the rich folklore of the Ainu people. The entire experience felt magical, as the nighttime setting allowed me to fully immerse myself in a vibrant, otherworldly forest.

If you’re staying in the Lake Akan area, definitely check with your hotel front desk when you arrive. Many offer same-day ticket purchases for Kamuy Lumina. It’s best to reserve early in the evening, especially on weekends, as some time slots do fill up.

Lake Akan – where nature meets Ainu tradition

The next morning, I had the chance to take a cruise around Lake Akan, with stunning views all around. The Ainu have a deep respect for nature, and you can truly feel it there. The lake is famous for its rare green moss balls called marimo, seen as symbols of life and good luck. Visiting Lake Akan wasn’t just about the scenery; it was also a meaningful way to connect with Ainu culture and learn more about Hokkaido’s history.

I’ve seen a different side of Hokkaido beyond Sapporo and snow. The summer weather was warm and pleasant, and the landscape was bursting with color. With its natural beauty, deep cultural roots, and calming atmosphere, Hokkaido truly touches the heart. I hope this blog inspires you to begin your journey and experience the magic of Hokkaido for yourself.
