Lake Akan Marimo Cruise: See marimo up close at an island museum on Lake Akan
Operating from April through November, the Lake Akan Marimo Cruise offers passengers a rare chance to see marimo algae balls and cruise the scenic Takiguchi area, where wildflowers, fall foliage and other seasonal sights are on display.
A particular cruise highlight is visiting the Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center on Churui Island. The marimo at Akan Lake grow about 5 millimeters per year, with some measuring up to 20-30 centimeters. Here, you will not only learn about these rare plants, found in its spherical form only in Japan, but also see marimo up close in an underwater viewing area.
Akan Kanko Kisen offers various sightseeing cruises from April to November. Choose from a larger boat tour, lasting approximately 85 minutes with regular departures scheduled throughout the day, or consider private motorboat cruises, lasting anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes.
