Hita City, Oita Prefecture
Fans of the hit manga Attack on Titan will want to make a pilgrimage to Hita City in Kyushu’s Oita Prefecture. Isayama Hajime, the creator of the manga on which the animated series is based, was born in Hita. In his honor, bronze statues of the main characters from the series have been erected around the town.
At the foot of the 94m-tall Oyama Dam, you will find statues of Eren and his childhood friends Mikasa and Armin. The trio are looking up at the dam wall, just as they would be looking at the Wall Maria in Attack on Titan. Another bronze statue is that of beloved character Levi Ackerman, located in front of JR Hita station.
Be sure to also visit the “Attack on Titan in HITA Museum” feature to view the exhibits on the manga series, including some of Isayama’s original drawings.
Travel to JR Hita Station from JR Hakata Station via the special express train (1 hour 15 minutes), or take the highway bus from Fukuoka Airport (1 hour). To reach Oyama Dam, take the bus from Hita bus terminal to the Nakagawara bus stop (25 minutes), then walk 20 minutes to the dam.
