Hyogo Tourism Bureau
A World Cultural Heritage Site and symbol of Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, the 400-year-old Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s most beautiful and best-preserved castles. Called White Heron Castle for its white outer walls and unique roof that resembles a heron spreading its wings, Himeji Castle makes you feel Japan’s Beauty just by looking at it. There are many great viewpoints in Himeji that allow you to enjoy the castle from different angles. How about taking a stroll through the castle town and find your favorite spot?
When you arrive at the central entrance of the Himeji Station, the dignified Himeji Castle appears in front of you. This is a popular spot to enjoy the view of Himeji Castle from the south. To see the castle from the southeast, head to Shiromidai Park. From here the main tower looks neater and more three-dimensional. The life-size replicas of the “shachihoko” ridge-end tiles that adorn the castle main tower, with the head of a tiger and the body of a fish, are a must see and a great photo spot.
At Shirotopia Memorial Park, located north of Himeji Castle, you can observe the transit turret that connects the east small keep and the northwest small keep. The morning and evening are the best time for taking pictures. Head west to Otokoyama Reservoir Park and climb up the 198 steps to enjoy a superb view of Himeji Castle from the top. Around the Karo Yashikiato Park you can admire Himeji Castle while enjoying a leisurely walk on a road that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). You can also buy Himeji specialties at the nearby souvenir shops as you pass this park on your way to the castle.
From Himeji Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen, walk 20 minutes to the castle, or take a bus from the north exit to "Otemon-mae" bus stop and walk 4 minutes.
