HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > English Walking Tour of Kurashiki

Join a truly local guide to explore the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter and discover the secrets and history of the city.

The Inland Sea, SETOUCHI Tourism Authority

Really get to know the historic city of Kurashiki on a walking tour led by the 9th-generation representative of the Hara family, who have lived in the area for over 400 years.

Learn how Kurashiki, which was shogunate territory from 1603 to 1867, was shaped into the Bikan Historical Quarter. Experience a more personal, deep side of the city through your guide’s stories.

On your walk, you will visit Kanryuji Temple, where you can see the remains of a battle that took place during the Meiji era (1868–1912). Achi Shrine, said to protect the peace of Kurashiki, stands at the top of Mt. Tsurugata overlooking the historical area of the city.

Next, explore the Mt. Tsurugata Tunnel as your guide shares some of the rumors about it. A now peaceful cobblestone alley is associated with stories from World War II.

Marvel at the elegant Kurashiki Ivy Square, now a hotel, and discover the important role it played in the city’s history, before relaxing during a coffee break at Cafe Ueda, a local institution since 1972.

How to get there

From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Okayama Station (about 50 minutes). From there, switch to the JR Sanyo Main Line train to Kurashiki Station (about 20 minutes). A 10-minute walk from the station will take you to LOGIN Kurashiki ANNEX.
