Fukuroda Falls
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Fukuroda Falls
Ibaraki Prefecture
Fukuroda Falls is an impressive waterfall in Ibaraki Prefecture. The power and sound of water crashing over the 120-meter high and 73-meter wide cascades leave a great impact as you gaze up. A tunnel takes you to two observation platforms for close up views of the four-tier waterfalls - the first viewing platform facing the falls’ middle tier, and the second providing a vantage point from above the cascades.
Throughout the year, the rich nature surrounding the falls is enhanced by the different vivid colors of the seasons. In spring, the leaves on the trees start to sprout one after another and a vibrant green covers mountain slopes. In summer, you can feel the freshness of the cool water as it splashes, dancing and shining in the sunlight.
Autumn is a particularly beautiful season when the leaves change colors. During this time and in the winter, the low angled rays of the setting sun brilliantly illuminate the rushing waters of the falls. In the depths of winter the entire waterfall may become frozen, providing a snowy white spectacle.
From Tokyo Station to Fukuroda Station, take the train for about 2 hours and 30 minutes. From the station, it’s about a 10-minute bus or taxi ride to the falls.
