Fukuroda Falls
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Fukuroda Falls
Ibaraki Prefecture
Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki Prefecture is one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan. The power and sound of water crashing over the 120 meters high and 73 meters wide cascades leave a great impact as you gaze up. A tunnel takes you to two observation platforms for close up views of the four-tier waterfalls – the first viewing platform facing the falls’ middle tier, the second providing a vantage point from above the cascades.
Year round the scenery surrounding the falls is enhanced by the different vivid colors of the seasons. In spring the leaves on the trees start to sprout one after another and a vibrant green covers mountain slopes. In summer you can feel the freshness of the cool water as it splashes, dancing and shining in the sunlight.
Autumn is a particularly beautiful season when the leaves are changing color. During this time and winter the low angled rays of the setting sun brilliantly illuminate the rushing waters of the falls. In the depths of winter the entire waterfall may become frozen, providing a snowy white spectacle.
JR Fukuroda is the closest station to the falls. From the station, it’s around a 10 minute bus or taxi to the falls. If driving, the falls are 50 minutes from Naka IC on the Jōban Expressway.
