Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture
The Goishi Coast of Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, boasts several kilometers of trails surrounded by pine tree groves, with unparalleled views of islands and rock formations scattered across the ocean. The coast derives its name from the Japanese game of go, due to the resemblance of the game’s pieces to the smooth black stones that make up the beaches along the coast.
From spring to autumn, in addition to being able to camp right on the coast, visitors can also go on a boat tour of the coast, led by local fishermen. Along with offering the unique experience of meeting a Japanese fisherman, this exhilarating tour includes passing through the Anatoshiiso, a rock formation with three holes going through it.
The Goishi Coast is also the perfect gateway to the Michinoku Coastal Trail and the Sanriku Fukko (Reconstruction) National Park, which both not only offer incredible views, but also allow visitors to hear stories of resilience from those who have rebuilt their towns following the tsunami in 2011, which caused great destruction to the region.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki Station (2 hours 10 minutes), then take the Ichinoseki-Kesennuma Line to Kesennuma Station (1 hour 10 minutes). From Kesennuma Station, take the Ofunato Line (BRT) to Ofunato Marumori Station (1 hour). Finally, from Marumori Station, take the Goishi Line to Goishi Kaigan Station (20 minutes).
