Standing about halfway up Akagami Mountain, Tarobogu Shrine in Higashi Omi, Shiga Prefecture is dedicated to the “god of victory” and is reported to have been built around the 6th century. One of Japan’s most influential historical leaders, Prince Shotoku, is said to have prayed at the shrine.

With its very mysterious and sacred atmosphere, the shrine is known throughout Japan for granting many benefits in addition to good fortune, and is visited by many athletes and business executives. 742 steps lead up to its main building, which offers a panoramic view of the land below.

Many shrines (and temples) around Japan sell omamori, or amulets, which people carry on a daily basis to bring good luck or to ward off bad luck. These are typically placed in beautiful Japanese-patterned amulet cases and treated with care.

Rather than simply buying an omamori, Tarobogu Shrine offers a special experience that allows you to make your own. Choose from 160 types of amulet cases and knots, tie a knot with a string of your favorite color, then write your wish on a special piece of paper and place it inside the omamori case. You’ll not only have a meaningful souvenir to take home, but also a beautiful reminder of your heartfelt wish.
