Go snowshoeing through this mountainous park to experience its winter beauty

Myoko Tourism Management Association

Myōkō-Togakushi Renzan National Park, which straddles Niigata and Nagano prefectures, was established in 2015. It’s a mountainous area that receives heavy snowfalls in the winter and so is popular with winter sport enthusiasts. During that chilly but beautiful season, the one activity that can be undertaken in the park by anybody of any fitness level and age is snowshoeing.

Snowshoes can be hired from the visitor centre near Imori Pond in Ikenotaira. You can then follow the self guided snowshoe course that starts across from the visitor centre and takes you through serene winter forests. The course takes about two hours to complete at a leisurely pace and is suitable for all fitness levels. Alternatively, sign up for a tour with a professional guide and explore other areas of the region from temples to majestic winter waterfalls.

How to get there

Shinkansen high speed trains take 2 hours to travel from JR Tokyo to JR Jōetsumyōkō. Transfer here to the Myōkō Haneuma line for a 40 minute train journey to Myōkō-Kōgen Station from there Ikenotaira ski resort is a 15 minute bus journey.
