Picturesque views and grazing cows at the largest public ranch in Japan

Karch Co., Ltd.

Covering an area of approximately 1,700 hectares, Naitai Highland Farm is the largest public ranch in Japan. Opened in 1972, the farm is located in the town of Kamishihoro in the Tokachi region (Central Hokkaido), which is the biggest dairy farming area in Japan. Naitai means "a deep mountain stream" in Ainu, the language of the indigenous people of Hokkaido. Approximately 2,000 cows graze here, and, if you are lucky, you can even spot wild deer.

In June, the ranch is the perfect spot to relax and refresh your body and mind while enjoying the new green leaves. If you want to see the fall foliage, the best time to visit is from late September to mid-October. In Autumn, Hokkaido has a comfortable climate, allowing you to spend a pleasant time admiring the changing leaves and picturesque views, such as Mt. Naitai covered in mist.

The 7-km road running up from the entrance gate to an altitude of 800 meters is one of the most popular driving roads in Tokachi. From Naitai Terrace, the new observation deck built in 2019, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Tokachi Plain as far as the eye can see.
