Relaxing in the hidden frost bath at Matsukawa Onsen
Hachimantai DMO Inc.
Matsukawa Onsen is one of Hachimantai’s natural onsens, hidden among the trees of the surrounding forests. Luckily, you don’t need to search for it, because there’s a bus that goes straight there from Morioka Station in Iwate Prefecture.
The name “Matsukawa Onsen” refers to two different springs in the same area: Matsukawa-so and Kyoun-so. Each has its own unique atmosphere and characteristics, but one thing they all share in common is being perfectly suited to relaxation after a day spent exploring Hachimantai. Their outdoor baths let you enjoy crimson scenery in autumn and pure white snow drapes in winter. For washing away the stress of the cold and everyday life, please try Matsukawa Onsen.
How to get there
From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station. From Morioka Station, take a Northern Iwate Transportation bus from bay #3 bound for Matsukawa Onsen. Matsukawa-so is a 5-minute walk from the Matsukawa-so-guchi bus stop, while Kyoun-so is a short walk from the terminus (which is about 1 hour 50 minutes from the station).
