San’in Tourism Organization
The beautiful 2-km-long river gorge known as Oni no Shitaburui is located in the town of Okuizumo, Shimane Prefecture. The shapes of the rocks and boulders here have been carved out over thousands of years by the waters flowing through the gorge, and visitors here never tire of the amazing sightseeing views. It gives you a sense of the grand scale of your natural surroundings. Of the many boulders and rock formations you can see at Oni-no-Shitaburui, one that stands out is Oni-no-Shito-iwa, a boulder that has been split in half. It is said that a demon tested out the cutting power of his sword on it, which is how the boulder gets its name. Recently, this boulder has become popular amongst fans of the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, as it resembles a boulder that the main character cut in half during his training. At the Okuizumo Tatara Sword Museum, about 15 minutes by car from Oni-no-Shitaburui Gorge, there is a black sword on display which is very similar to the black sword that the main character of Demon Slayer uses. too.
