Enjoy sightseeing and strolling around Onomichi, the cat town
Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture
The city of Onomichi has prospered as a seaport town since ancient times. Close-lying mountains approach the coastline of the Onomichi waterway, which runs calmly from east to west. The streets and mountain sides in this slender hillside town are lined with houses and venerable temples, which make for truly beautiful scenery.
Famous for its slopes, Onomichi is also known for its many cats. You will certainly be comforted by the sight of cats basking in the sun while walking around the town. At the Onomichi City Museum of Art, battles are fought every day in the depths of the laid-back landscape between a cat that really wants to enter the museum and a guard who gently blocks its way.
At the Onomichi Maneki Neko Kobo workshop in Hodoji Kannon-do, you can experience painting a maneki neko (beckoning cat) of your own in a quiet and relaxing space, creating a one-of-a-kind charm that’s sure to bring you good luck.
