A Local Sake Vacation in Niigata
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > A Local Sake Vacation in Niigata
Minami Uonuma City Tourism Association
“Sake-tion” (Sake + Vacation) is a term coined to capture the idea of a trip centered on appreciating premium Japanese sake. It was thought up by the creative team and videographer who made the video featured here.
Minamiuonuma City produced the Sake-tion short film to highlight how fun and interesting a tour of their historic and prosperous local sake industry can be. The three breweries in Minamiuonuma and two breweries of neighboring Uonuma City have all been operating in this region for over 100 years.
Minamiuonuma and Uonuma in southern Niigata Prefecture are known throughout Japan for their extraordinary winter climate characterized by abundant snowfall. While the harsh winter climate may seem burdensome at times, it conversely serves as the perfect conditions for brewing refined Japanese sakes. Take a Sake-tion to try them for yourself and to see first-hand how Japan’s national drink is produced from just three simple ingredients: rice, water and koji.
Urasa Station is about 1 hour and 30 minutes from JR Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen.
