Wonders of the Shimanami Kaido: An oceanside ride along the Cyclists’ Sanctuary
Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture
The Shimanami Kaido is an ocean road across the Seto Inland Sea that draws cyclists from all over the world for its vast riches and natural beauty. With an astounding length of around 70 kilometers, the Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan’s best cycling routes. Cycle across this panoramic route while feeling the comfort of the sea breeze and enjoying the scenery, which changes with every season.
Well maintained and marked, the Shimanami Kaido has earned the name “Cyclists’ Sanctuary.” There are many places where you can rent bicycles, and one of them is even near Onomichi Station. You can choose from a variety of bicycles, depending on your schedule and physical fitness.
There are approximately 240 rest spots called Shimanami Cycle Oases offering amenities such as restrooms and water along the Shimanami Kaido. Among them is Oyama Shrine, which is the only bicycle shrine in Japan. Stop by and pray for the safety of your trip.
How to get there
From Kansai International Airport, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Shin-Onomichi Station (about 1 hour), then take a taxi to Onomichi Station (about 10 minutes). At Onomichi Station, rent a bicycle at a nearby rental store.
