Embark on an adventure to discover Izu’s great nature and cultural attractions

Shimoda City

Created by undersea volcanoes over 20 million years ago, the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a designated a UNESCO Global Geopark and offers visitors unique landscapes and fascinating biodiversity. With Seamon, an information center for nature experiences and outdoor activities located in Shimoda City, you will be able to feel the great nature of Izu and enjoy its attractions to the fullest.

Seamon introduces a wide variety of experience programs, including guided tours of the Izu’s geosites, that allow you to discover the sea and the mountains, as well as the culture and history, of this beautiful region. Enjoy a wealth of fun ocean experiences, such as surfing, SUP, and sea kayaking, at Shimoda City's many beaches. Boat fishing has also become popular recently, and you can have your catch cooked at a restaurant.

Shimoda was one of the first Japanese ports to open to foreign commerce in 1854 and witnessed some of the earliest interactions between westerners and Japanese. Joining a Seamon tour will allow you to learn about the city's history and enjoy a traditional geisha dance. Other activities, including a dyeing-making experience using traditional Japanese techniques, are also available, and your guide will help you choose according to your preferences.
