Renovated buildings and newly opened facilities working toward a better future

Kyoto City Tourism Association

A city of history, culture, and scenic beauty, Kyoto is one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations. Tourism, however, has an impact on both the environment and the community. In recent years, Kyoto City has been taking several initiatives toward a more sustainable of developing tourism, including long-term strategies presented in the City's Master Plan. Here are two facilities in downtown Kyoto that are drawing attention for promoting a more conscious tourism at local level.

Ace Hotel Kyoto

Ace Hotel Kyoto was renovated from the historical building of Shinpukan, the former Kyoto Central Telephone Office, which was the first Registered Cultural Property designated by Kyoto City. Opened in June 2020, the hotel hopes to become a new cultural landmark of Kyoto and "an interactive link to this town.”

Several measures to encourage sustainability have been implemented here, such as paper water packs instead of plastic bottles and toiletries kept to the minimum required. The hotel also offers a variety of stylish restaurants and cafés, which can be enjoyed by both guests and the general public alike.

GOOD NATURE STATION - MARKET

Opened in December 2019 in Shijo Kawaramachi, GOOD NATURE STATION is a commercial complex facility featuring a grocery shop and deli, original cosmetics and concept shops, restaurants, and hotel accommodations. The services and products provided here are selected based on whether they are “GOOD for the body, soul, community, society and the Earth.” An elegant space full of greenery and unique design features, the complex is now a popular place that aims at introducing eco-friendly lifestyle concepts and inspiring people towards a sustainable society.
