Tobishima Kaido Cycling Route

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Tobishima Kaido Cycling Route

Hop on a bike and explore the most authentic side of the Seto Inland Sea

Kure City

Crossing seven enchanting islands linked by a set of seven bridges, Tobishima Kaido is a cycling route that connects the town of Kawajiri in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, to the island of Okamura in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. With much of the route running parallel to the coast, Tobishima Kaido offers an exhilarating ride across stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea.

The distance from Kawajiri to Okamura Island is about 30km by shortest route and can be completed in a day, but there are plenty of detour options if you want to create your own cycling adventure. Experienced cyclists can tackle the 50km course that crosses all the islands, while beginners and families can opt for the easier 15km route that runs around the island of Shimo-Kamagari.

Savor the sea breeze as you take in the unique atmosphere of the islands. Cycle your way through scenic landscapes, picturesque villages, and local attractions. Explore the port of Sannose in Shimo-Kamagari, Kenmin-no-Hama beach resort on Kami-Kamagari, the fishing village on Toyoshima, and the historic town of Mitarai on Osaki Shimojima and discover the most authentic side of the Seto Inland Sea.

A hassle-free way to enjoy cycling on the Tobishima Kaido is to rent a bicycle. Rental bikes are also a fun way to get around. You can pick up and drop off your rental bike at JR Nigata Station on the mainland Kure City, if you arrange it in advance.
