On the first day of your trip, after arriving at the airport head straight for the pure white snow-covered world of the Kushiro Wetlands! For the basic plan at the Toro Nature Center, you can choose three activities from the following four: ride down the wetland river, snowshoeing tour, Dutch oven lunch, and smelt fishing. You’re sure to enjoy the Hokkaido wilderness in this land that stretches far and wide. For accommodation, stay at a hotel in Kushiro City.
When you leave the hotel, freely explore Kushiro City. At the Yonemachi Park Observation Deck you can see all of the port town, Kushiro. Learn about Kushiro’s history at the Kushiro City Museum and Hokuto Ruins Exhibition Center. After having lunch near the station, head to Utoro, the port town of Shari via the Senmo Main Line and bus. Sleep early and rest well for the next day’s activities.
After getting up early, explore the Shiretoko Goko Lakes on snowshoes! Access to the deep woods of Shiretoko is limited to a certain number of people and, in its silence, feels almost mystical. After taking a break at the roadside station, head to the drift ice tour. Of course you’ll be walking on drift ice, but as you’ll be wearing a dry suit, you can even experience floating in the sea! You can fully experience the winter Hokkaido sea.
After freely exploring the Utoro area, lunch will be the Emishi deer meat burger, unique to the region. From the afternoon, you will be cruising on the drift ice. As the boat splits the drift ice, you’re sure to spot some animals and birds that have made it through the winter. The flocks of white-tailed eagles and Steller’s sea eagles are absolutely stunning! You can enjoy the Hokkaido winter essential crab cuisine for dinner. The fresh taste is impressive!
On the last day, leave Utoro for sightseeing in the Abashiri area. One famous place in Abashiri is the “Abashiri Kangoku Museum,” where important cultural properties and more are presented in over 20 structures which faithfully recreate the period. For lunch you can enjoy famous local cuisine like a fried Salmon Okhotsk Abashiri zangi rice bowl or Abashiri champon.
Enjoy "Kyoto by the Sea", vast sand dunes and the breathtaking scenery of nature to the fullest! You can also savour Japanese gourmet meal such as Wagyu beef.
