A Couple’s Romantic Escape: Meiji-Era Date & Japanese-Western Fusion Food

Did you know that deep within Nikko’s untouched nature and sacred mountains lies a Western-style cottage built during the Meiji era?

Over a century ago, American trading merchant F.W. Horn, like many other foreigners, was drawn to Nikko’s beauty and went there for a visit. Completely charmed by Nikko’s serene natural surroundings, F.W. Horn decided to build a home there.

Eventually, F.W. Horn became known as more than just an American trader. He earned the title of ‘Father of the Gramophone’ in Japan! Fascinated by the gramophone, Horn founded the Nippon Phonograph Corporation, now known as Nippon Columbia. This company pioneered the mass production and distribution of electric gramophones in Japan.

And the house’s history doesn’t end there. Japan’s then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aoi Shigemitsu, once sought refuge here. In fact, you’ll even find handwritten notes by Aoi Shigemitsu on display in the house when you visit. To immortalise the importance of this site, it was crowned as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2006 for being a valuable building that represents the Meiji era.

This rustic house, built using masonry techniques with local Nikko stones, still stands strong today in a corner of the Nikko Fudoson Park Area. In 1977, the building was converted into a Western-style restaurant—Meiji-no-Yakata!

A Culinary Ode to the Meiji Era

Meiji-no-Yakata’s menu is an ode to the cultural fusion that defined the Westernisation movement in Japan during the Meiji era. Serving special renditions of Japanese-Western cuisine, this charming restaurant offers an intimate and meaningful atmosphere for couples to savour both the food and each other’s company.

One of its must-try dishes is the rice omelette (omurice). Meticulously crafted by skilled chefs, this dish features tender chicken pilaf blanketed with fluffy eggs and topped with a rich demi-glace sauce that takes hours of prep, giving rise to an unforgettable flavour difficult to replicate at home!

The menu extends to various hamburger steaks, beef stews, seafood dishes, and even vegetarian options. From bouillabaisse to “Tochigi” tenderloin steak, Meiji-no-Yakata creates a culinary experience embodying the unique cultural fusion of Japanese-Western cuisine.

A Perfect Setting for a Romantic Meal

For an extra special dining experience, opt for the Chef’s Recommended Full Course meal and leave the pairing of dishes to the professional chefs! Top off your couple’s retreat with a glass of Meiji-no-Yakata’s house wine and sip away as you share heartfelt moments with your partner.

Nestled in the privacy of lush greenery and deep cultural history of Nikko, Meiji-no-Yakata offers an unparalleled romantic retreat. Whether celebrating an anniversary, a birthday, or simply seeking a memorable date, this enchanting restaurant is a must-visit for couples looking to create an unforgettable experience.
