Visiting Shingen Mochi Factory Theme Park
Yamanashi Prefecture is famous for a chewy rice cake confectionery called Kikyou Shingen Mochi. Founded in 1968, it is a bite-sized ball of mochi rolled in kinako (soybean) flour, and topped with kuromitsu (brown sugar) syrup which is served separately.
Head to Shingen Mochi Factory Them Park, an interactive factory where you can see how 120,000 pieces of Kikyou Shingen Mochi are packed in a day. What makes it unique is that it is wrapped in a plastic furoshiki, which is still done by hand. After the tour, fill a special bag with as many Kikyou Shingen Mochi as you want for just 220 yen! There is also a shop selling a selection of its products at a reduced price. Entry to the factory is free, but there are specific timings for the factory tour which takes about 20 minutes.
Within the factory is a cafe where you can enjoy a variety of specially-made snacks, like Kikyou Shingen Mochi soft serve ice cream plus, manju, and kinako latte topped with kinako!
