Setouchi Shimanami Kaido

〜Cycle on the sea!〜

Setouchi Shimanami Kaido – a road made up of seven bridges that connect the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It attracts a lot of people to visit with its picturesque island scenery and a bicycle path which is the first in Japan to cross a strait.

◆Enjoy the scenery of many beautiful islands and the majestic bridge

Setouchi Shimanami Kaido connects Onomichi city in Hiroshima prefecture and Imabari city in Ehime prefecture with a total length of about 60km. It allows you to take in the view of 727 lush islands, both large and small, that are surrounded by the blue sea, and passes through six of these islands. The seven beautiful bridges that connect these islands come in different shapes and offer contrasting sceneries. As you cross the sturdy road on the Seto Inland Sea and interact with people on the islands in a relaxed manner, there is no doubt that you will feel the therapeutic effects as you get a feel of the seasons amid abundant nature.

◆Cycling paradise that is the pride of Japan

The greatest feature of Setouchi Shimanami Kaido is that it is the first road in Japan to cross a strait, and can be crossed over either by foot or by bicycle. It was also selected by CNN as one of the “7 best bike routes in the world” and attracts cyclists to visit from all over the world. The local governments along the road operate bicycles for rent, and allow visitors to pick up and/or return the bicycles freely at the rental bike terminals in every district.
