A rare Bird-Watching experience—thousands of cranes in flight

Izumi City in Kagoshima Prefecture is the migration ground for over 10,000 cranes from October to March. The city is the only place in Japan you can see such a large flock, and the sight of the graceful birds soaring in great numbers at dawn is a memorable experience. The cranes were designated a Special Natural Monument in 1952 by the government. You can discover more about these birds at Crane Park Izumi where staff proficient in foreign languages are on hand.

When to go: October through December
