Feel the call of the wild along this 43-kilometer-long cycling route in eastern Hokkaido. The Okhotsk Kitami City Tokoro-cho Abashiri Golden Route starts at Lake Saroma, runs along the shoreline, and goes past Lake Notoro and Abashiri Prison, before ending in Abashiri City. (You can also start from Abashiri). Along the way cyclists will be treated with beautiful views of Japan’s rugged northern landscapes, such as fields of wild flowers around Lake Saroma, cattle grazing in the grass of Notoro Cape, and fields of crimson glasswort near Lake Notoro in autumn. Be sure to stop and sample some delicious Hokkaido fare, like wagyu beef and fresh-caught seafood. Stop by one of the area’s many onsen for a relaxing soak.
