Course

Highlights

  • The Tokapuchi 400 comprises several routes which suit varying degrees of experience and fitness. From Obihiro, the northern route takes you through the ‘sea of trees’ of the Mikuni Pass, while the southern route passes through countryside dotted with culinary hotspots. Both routes have with low traffic, so are suitable for less-experienced cyclists. Rest stops are located along both routes, including Higashitaisetsu Nature Center and Pia 21 Shihoro roadside station, serving local dishes.

  • All along the Tokapuchi 400, cyclist-friendly facilities and signage make the routes convenient and enjoyable. Summer is considered the best season for riding here, thanks to the region’s mild climate in this season. Cycling downhill from the heights of the Mikuni Pass is an exhilarating experience.

  • The region surrounding the Tokapuchi 400 offers scenic natural beauty in abundance. Highlights include Mount Asahidake, located within Daisetsuzan National Park; Lake Mashu; the Kushiro wetlands; and the Mikuni Pass, which is the highest peak found along Hokkaido’s national highways. Ease post-ride fatigue in the natural hot springs at Nukahira Onsen and Tokachi Onsen.

Experience the untamed beauty of the Hokkaido countryside on the Tokapuchi 400. This expansive 403-kilometer-long National Cycling Route starts from the city of Obihiro, and stretches across the Tokachi Plain in a figure-eight pattern. There are also shorter-length courses suitable for intermediate cyclists, such as the 96-kilometer-long Panorama Course, and the 91-kilometer-long Garden Course. Cycle through rolling fields and verdant forests, past tranquil lakes and towering peaks. Along the way, stop to enjoy Hokkaido specialties like lamb barbecue, farm-fresh dairy products, and fresh-caught seafood. Be sure to soak your weary muscles with a bath at the beautiful Tokachigawa Onsen.
