Trek through a ground blizzard

Jifubuki, or ground blizzard, is a natural phenomenon unique to the snowy Tsugaru plains in Aomori Prefecture. Powerful winds blow fresh snow upwards to create a hazy scenic effect and sometimes even a complete whiteout. At Tsugaru, you can join a tour to trek through jifubuki with a local guide.

Don traditional winter clothes from the Tsugaru region for protection against the harsh winds. These include a pair of baggy monpe trousers, snowshoes, and a kakumaki shawl made with wool blankets.

The outfits' vibrant colors contrast against the stark white background. Weather conditions tend to vary from day to day, and if the winds are not strong enough, you can still enjoy fantastic views of the Tsugaru plains. Jifubuki excursions are available from late January to mid-February. Be sure to reserve your tour in advance because spaces are limited.
