Take a Private Tour of the Village of Springs

A peaceful lifestyle centered around water in Shiga Prefecture

Let local residents guide you through the unique village of Harie—also known as the Village of Springs because of its one-of-a-kind water supply system. You will be soothed by the sound of spring water flowing through the canals that transect the charming village. Reminiscent of old Japan, with traditional tiled roofs and wooden houses, you will feel as though you have traveled back in time. Walk alongside the local people of Harie as you discover a remarkable feature inside their homes: crystal-clear kabata springs, where natural underground water is used in both household wells and kitchen sinks.

Dine at a local Japanese restaurant before making your way to sake brewery Kawashima Shuzo, founded in 1865. Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their brewing process before treating your tastebuds, as you sample award-winning sake made from locally-sourced rice and pure spring water. Finally, discover a beautiful traditional art at Suita Sensu, a Japanese fan folding studio in the nearby town of Adogawa. Local artisans will provide an insightful demonstration and short explanation of the traditional production process.

This tour on the northwestern shores of majestic Lake Biwa, offers breathtaking views of Mt. Hira and a taste of the tranquil Japanese countryside with a scenic stroll through rice paddies and vegetable fields. This all-encompassing day trip is provided by Yutour, a Shiga-based tour agent. Offering a wide range of personalized tours and services, the team of knowledgeable Shiga locals ensures guests enjoy an authentic experience of their hometown.

Please note that Harie is a living village, so residents ask that all visitors come as part of a tour group (advance reservation required) overseen by local guides. Please refrain from exploring the village on your own.

Access: From Kyoto Station, take the a rapid train on the JR Kosai Line to Shin-Asahi Station (about 45 minutes).
