Explore the Mystical Koyasan Okuno-in Cemetery by Night

Take an enchanting trip to the spirit world with a wander through Koyasan's main gravesite

While the precincts of the Koyasan temple complex in northern Wakayama are a fascinating destination even by day, they become even more intriguing and atmospheric after the sun goes down. Soak up history and mystique as you wander through the Okuno-in cemetery at night with a specially licensed guide. You’ll be treated to stories about Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai─the founder of this well-known collection of temples. See his grave and learn the story of his death (or does he still live?) as you learn some of the tenets of Shingon Buddhism. In Shingon Buddhism, Kobo Daishi is believed to rest in eternal meditation and keep praying for the peace and happiness.

This curated walk highlights aspects of the cemetery that travelers often miss on unaccompanied visits, such as the symbolism surrounding the shape of the tombstones, Buddhist funeral culture and other traditions. Expect to be entertained with legends, both spooky and silly, and other interesting stories, all explained to you in English.

This is a unique opportunity to experience Koyasan’s spiritual side at a time when all of the other tourists have gone home.
