Encounter a Magnificent Primeval Beech Forest in Tohoku

Explore this natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Aomori, northern Japan

You’ll feel both miles and millennia away from modern Japan on a trek through the primeval beech forests of Shirakami, Aomori Prefecture. The forest traces its literal roots back 8,000 years      and remains home to species of animals as diverse as the Asian black bear and the rare black woodpecker. Standing in the emerald glades of Shirakami, it’s not hard to see why this magnificent scenery has enchanted and inspired so many people through the years.
