With a history dating back to the Nara period (710-794), Nyoiji Temple is beautiful all year round, but the spring is when it really “blossoms”. Nyoiji is most famous for mitsuba tsutsuji, three-leaved azaleas, which bloom in April and create a stunning sight. The hillside along the temple is covered in tsutsuji azaleas to form a wall of light pink flowers.

Take a stroll on a short path along the hill in the temple grounds to be surrounded by the flowers. The Fudo-do hall here is unique in Japan as it features a fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian architectural styles resulting in a rare multi-storied structure. Nyoiji Temple is part of the 25 Kansai Flower Temples, a network of temples famous for seasonal flowers across the six Kansai region prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Shiga, Nara and Wakayama. Each of the 25 temples has a distinct blossom associated with it making them fantastic locations for the Japanese tradition of hanami flower viewing.

From Nyoiji’s tsutsuji azalea path you can look out over the temple precinct and take in the gorgeous cherry trees with sakura blossoms, in bloom at the same time, and enjoy a stunning view over Kumihama Bay opposite, and out to Mt. Kabuto on the far bank. The temple also has a quiet pond at the back, which is the perfect place for quiet reflection.
