Waiting for signs of spring? Blossoming earlier than cherry blossoms, the canola flower fields of Nyuta along the Shimanto River bank might be the sign you are looking for.
Every March, a brilliant yellow carpet of 10 million canola flowers covers the ground of a natural willow forest and various events, such as local product markets, are held in the same period. At night, the canola flower fields are illuminated, creating a magical sightseeing scene.
The Shimanto River is known as the last crystal-clear river in Japan, and the Nakamura area, located in Shimanto City on the western side of Kochi Prefecture, is the gateway to the river valley. The best way to reach this enchanting spot is renting a bicycle at the Shimanto City Tourism Association (in front of Nakamura Station, Tosa Kuroshio Railway). A lovely 20-minute ride via the iconic Red Iron Bridge will bring you to the canola flower fields.
How to get there
From Haneda Airport, it is about a 1 hour and 30 minute flight to Kochi Ryoma Airport, then about 30 minutes by bus to Kochi Station. Take an express train to Nakamura Station (about 1 hour and 50 minutes), then a 20-minute bicycle ride. Alternatively, it is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Kochi Ryoma Airport by car.
