Amamigunto National Park

Mt. Yuwandake Nature Observation Hiking Tour

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Go on a hike and observe the endemic flora and fauna that can only be seen in this area as you safely climb the highest peak in the Amami Islands, Mt. Yuwandake, which is also the central component of a World Natural Heritage site.

Mt. Yuwandake is a sacred mountain and has been designated a National Natural Monument. 694.4 meters tall, it is located in the center of an evergreen broadleaf forest zone full of world-class natural treasures. A place full of excitement, along the trail you can encounter Amami Oshima’s endemic epiphytic and terrestrial orchids, wild birds such as the Owston’s woodpecker, and if you are lucky, even the poisonous habu viper. We want to share the wonderful diversity of life and history of the area with our guests and ensure their enjoyment. Rest assured that we strive to fully attend to each and every one of our guests by providing private and small group tours. Please note that the area from the observatory to the summit is now off-limits for nature conservation purposes. After enjoying the great outdoors of Amami, you can also rest your tired body at a bath at the foot of the mountain. Half-day course: Meet at Yuwandake Prospect Park and disband on-site after tour completion. Full-day course: Tour includes a hike followed by a visit to Materiya Falls and other places. Lunch and transportation included. Required hiking time (for reference only): Approximately 3 hours; walking time: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes; walking distance: 3.2 kilometers; elevation gain: approximately 200 meters
