Walk ancient mountain paths and discover Hakone's historical gems
Board a boat at Kojiri Port or Togendai Port, located near the Hakone Visitor Center. Sail across the tranquil waters of Lake Ashinoko and enjoy beautiful views of Mount Fuji, Mount Komagatake, and the forested shoreline. Step off at Moto-Hakone Port and walk to the crimson-red gates of Hakone-jinja Shrine. After exploring the shrine complex, ascend an ancient, stone-paved path to the Amazake Chaya Teahouse.
Hakone-jinja Shrine
The crimson-red Hakone-jinja Shrine stands at the foot of Mount Hakone and was completed in 757. The approach is lined with towering cedar trees, some over 800 years old. Hakone-jinja Shrine venerates local mountain deities associated with good fortune and matchmaking.
Stone-paved path
The Old Tokaido Highway was used frequently during the Edo period (1603–1867), connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. This section of the route, called Hakone Pass, is very steep, and was difficult to walk at a time when most people traveled on foot. The Tokugawa shogunate, Japan's feudal government during the Edo period, paved the route with stones for safer travel. The stone path is still preserved today.
Amazake Chaya Teahouse
The thatch-roofed Amazake Chaya Teahouse is over 400 years old. Travelers during the Edo period found rest and refreshment here. After an exhilarating walk, unwind on a tatami mat over a cup of amazake—a sweet fermented rice drink—and rice cakes.
