Ochudo: Mt. Fuji’s sacred trail between heaven and earth A trek where you’ll experience the hardiness of the plants that live in this harsh environment and connect with the prayers people made to Mt. Fuji long ago.
The Ochudo Trail circumambulates Mt. Fuji at the altitude of the Fifth Station. Located at the treeline, it was considered the boundary between heaven and earth. For Fuji-ko Shinto practitioners, it was a sacred path only open to ascetics who had climbed the mountain at least three times. This tour covers a round trip along the section of the trail from Subaru Line Fifth Station to Onniwa, which is now maintained as a walking path. The two-hour trek will give you breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji’s summit, a “sea of clouds,” lakes and forests spreading below, as well as the distant peaks of the Minami Alps and Yatsugatake Range. You’ll have views of lava flows and volcanic craters, reminders that Mt. Fuji is an active volcano. Along the way, you’ll also experience the hardiness of trees growing horizontally as a result of harsh winds and snow, and vegetation stretching up the slopes despite frequent landslides.
