Unwind with Traditional Ama Divers

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Enjoy the culinary and cultural heritage of the Ama divers

The port town of Osatsucho has the highest population of Ama (traditional female free divers) in Japan, making it the perfect place to learn about the ancient customs of these skilled women. At Ama Hut Hachiman, you are invited to enjoy handmade meals of rice and miso as well as Japanese spiny lobster soup, and learn how to dance in the local style. The Ama divers will regale you with stories of their day-to-day life as you learn about the fascinating, yet dangerous, world of Ama diving. You can try on an Ama diving outfit for an additional fee.

Additionally, visitors can try their hand at making Noshibukuro, gift envelopes, or take part in a beach-cleaning activity.

The ama hut is accessible to all: it is wheelchair-friendly (and offers wheelchair rental), offers free Wi-Fi, has a prayer room for Muslim guests, and toilets and washing facilities. The ""Ama Bus"" offers accessible, free transportation between the hut and Toba Station.
