Venture to the peak of Mount Onagi, explore a beech forest and take a soak in a nearby hot spring

Hike to the summit of Mount Onagi for beautiful panoramic views, before exploring the beech forests surrounding Kamaike Pond. Afterward, enjoy local delicacies at Kamaike Bunarintei rest house and unwind at a natural open-air hot spring in Amakazari Highland. Alternatively, hike to the rustic Yamada Ryokan in the hot spring village, Otari Onsen. (Note: All paths except the passage to Yamada Ryokan are closed in winter.)

It takes about 90 minutes to reach the summit of Mount Onagi from the trailhead at Yutoge Pass. At 1,566 meters, Mount Onagi's peak offers beautiful views of the Hakuba mountain mange, Mount Amakazari, and on clear days, the Sea of Japan.

Ancient beech trees

Kamaike Pond

The circular path around Kamaike Pond can be walked in about 40 minutes. This spot is particularly beautiful in the autumn season when the trees are tinged with copper, gold and crimson hues. Take a break by the water's edge and enjoy reflections of the surrounding mountains and forests on the pond's surface.
