Watch the Sun Rise From Above the Clouds on Mount Tarumae

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Spectacular views await from the mountaintop by Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu in Shikotsu-Toya National Park is one of Hokkaido's hidden gems. Enjoy a beautiful sunrise view of the lake beneath a sea of clouds, depending on the weather, from Mount Tarumae. This guided hike takes 90 minutes round-trip to complete and is suitable for everyone, even inexperienced climbers and children.

Departing before dawn, a guide will bring you along a trail that goes all the way to the summit of the mountain as the enchanting night sky gradually lightens. Enjoy a cup of coffee brewed by the guide when you reach the top and wait for day to break. This breathtaking view of Lake Shikotsu at dawn will stay in your heart for long to come.

Shuttle service to and from Sapporo and surrounding areas is provided for your convenience. On the drive, you may also catch sight of Ezo deer and foxes native to Hokkaido.
