Towada-Hachimantai National Park

“Dragon Eye” and the Thawing Mountain Ponds

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Explore the snowmelt ponds, including the “Dragon Eye” where the white of lingering snow contrasts with the blue waters, and walk through Japan’s densest Aomori fir forest

This trekking tour lets you fully enjoy the snow-covered summit area of Mt. Hachimantai, located along the backbone of the Ou Mountains in northern Tohoku. It is a limited-time course offered only during the lingering snow season from early May to early June.

At an elevation of around 1,600 meters, you’ll feel close to the sky and clouds as you take in the gentle scenery of the Hachimantai summit area. The tour takes you to the “Dragon Eye” and the surrounding snowmelt ponds, which look like scattered jewels. Most of the route is over firm, compacted snow. Wearing long boots or hiking shoes, you’ll crunch your way along the path and even reach the summit of Mt. Hachimantai. You can also enjoy a bit of off-season fun in the snow. (The route is approximately 2.5 km long.)
