Mount Iwate-Hachimantai-Appi Kogen Trail

Hike a spectacular long-distance trail packed with alpine views, ridgeline walks, flowers, marshlands and hot springs

This 50-kilometer trail straddles Akita and Iwate prefectures, stretching from the Appi Kogen highlands to Mount Iwate and the Hachimantai area. It winds through primeval forests and offers magnificent views of the Ou mountain range. You can choose to hike short sections of the trail or complete the entire course over three to five days. Note that there are no campsites along the trail and the emergency huts are unmanned. Ensure you bring adequate food and water supplies.

Ura-Iwate Traverse

The Ura-Iwate Traverse is lined with Maries' fir and Erman's birch. Look out for seasonal flowers such as the pink-petaled Hakusan rhododendron (June to July) and the Japanese gentian's purple blooms (mid-summer to autumn).

Mitsuishi Emergency Hut

Mount Mitsuishi

Mount Mitsuishi overlooks scenic marshlands, which are ablaze with red and orange in fall. There is a fresh water supply near the Mitsuishi Emergency Hut, subject to seasonal availability.
