Dolphin-Watching Tour in Unzen-Amakusa National Park

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Watch wild dolphins swimming in the waters between the Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa

See graceful dolphins glide beneath the waves in the blue waters between the Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa from the comfort of a boat. Cruise from Kuchinotsu at the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula and head for the Hayasaki Strait at the entrance of the Ariake Sea. You can see bottlenose dolphins up to 3 meters in length in these waters as they dart beneath the ocean waves, playfully approach boats, and occasionally breach the water in splendid, powerful displays of cetacean agility. Up to 300 dolphins inhabit the Hayasaki Strait year-round, a rarity in Japan, where they feast on the abundance of fish that come and go with the tides.
