The Ogi Peninsula of Sado Island is said to have been formed some 12 to 14 million years ago by an underwater volcano eruption. Years of erosion from waves and wind have created stunning rock formations and sea caves. Stretching for 16 kilometers, the Sado Ogi Coast has been designated as a Special Natural Monument and Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government.

To truly appreciate the beauty of this marine park, slide into a kayak and leisurely explore Ogi's sea caves and ricky shoreline areas, many of which are unreachable except by boat. Marvel at the stunning sight of Ryuodo, the island's largest lava rock cave, which is called the Blue Grotto for its otherworldly glowing waters. See breathtaking views of the Sado Ogi Coast, with striking rock formations that can only be seen from the sea.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Niigata Station (about one hour 30 minutes), then take a taxi or bus to the Sado Kisen ferry terminal (10-15 minutes) and take the jetfoil ferry to Ryotsu (about one hour 10 minutes).Buses are available to Ogi, but will require one transfer and take about two hours. A taxi/hired car will take about one hour.
