Oyster Paradise: All You Can Eat Oysters

With 260 islands and fresh, delicious oysters, Matsushima Bay is a feast for the eyes and the stomach

Matsushima Bay is known for its beautiful views, celebrated for centuries by poets and travelers, but it is also a hub for oyster farming. The oysters here are not only enjoyed by locals but also exported for overseas consumption, making Matsushima Bay a must-visit site for seafood lovers.

Your tour, led by an English-speaking guide from In-Outbound Sendai-Matsushima, starts with a cruise alongside local fishermen to the oyster farms. Here, amid fantastic coastal scenery, you will learn what makes Matsushima Bay and the rest of Miyagi Prefecture an ideal environment for sustainably raising and harvesting these ocean delicacies. On the way back, you’ll stop at an oyster farm to sample some oysters fresh from the sea, paired with select condiments and locally brewed sake. Back on land, lunch awaits at a local oyster shack with an exquisite buffet of oyster cuisine, including steamed oysters, oyster rice, and oyster soup.

You can also choose to round out your modern culinary experience by visiting some historically and spiritually significant local temples. Discover Zuiganji, a lavish Buddhist temple decorated in gold leaf, and neighboring Entsuin, equally ornate and uniquely decorated.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Sendai Station (about 1 hour and 30 minutes)
