Cycling the Nature of Yakushima

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Cycling the Nature of Yakushima

Discover the beauty of Yakushima while enjoying a stress-free relaxing day

Yakushima Town

Yakushima is a small island of Kagoshima Prefecture in the East China Sea situated around 60 kilometers from the southernmost tip of the Kyushu region. This mountainous island, which is 130 kilometers in circumference and 90% covered in forest, was designated as Japan's first World Natural Heritage Site.

To discover the wonders of Yakushima best, we recommend cycling around Yakushima. You can cycle the main road which is approximately 100 kilometers long and offers great views of the mountains and the surrounding ocean. While cycling you will encounter beautiful beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and forests. There are many wonderful places to see the setting sun over the ocean.

You can also relax by visiting a nice café and having coffee made with Yakushima’s delicious water, or by enjoying the hot springs. If you are lucky, you may see Yaku-monkeys and Yaku-deer.

Nature’s masterpiece, Yakushima, is always an exciting place to be. Slow down a little and enjoy the scenery while being embraced by the energy of Yakushima.
