Visit the most extreme wild onsen in Japan and enjoy an outdoor bath directly at the hot spring source

Fukushima Prefecture Tourism and Local Products Association

A renowned hot spring area in Fukushima Prefecture, Nakanosawa Numajiri Onsen boasts the largest amount of hot spring water as a single source in Japan. The hot spring source, Numajiri Motoyu, is located deep in the Adatara mountains and makes for one of Japan’s most unique onsen experiences.

To reach this hidden hot spring, visitors must take a one-hour hike over volcanic terrain. The path is rocky and steep, so be sure to wear proper shoes. The trail follows the river sourced by Numajiri Motoyu, with the pale blue color of the water contrasting sharply with the warm tones of the volcanic landscape. When you reach the onsen source, you might feel like you have come across an ancient spring on the surface of Mars!

Soak in the natural bathing pools and enjoy the most extreme onsen experience surrounded by rugged wilderness and dramatic views. You can wear your swimsuit to dip in. With a pH of 2.1, close to a lemon, bathing here is thought to have many medicinal benefits.

In order to experience this incredible environment in a safe and respectful way, visitors must hire guides or visit as a part of tours that include guides. You’ll be supporting the local community and yourself. Guides are trained with volcanic gas monitoring tools to ensure a safe journey. Tours can be booked through Fukushima Travel or Aizu Dream Development (ADD), and professional guides can be hired at the Café & Activity Nowhere.
