Trekking in Hachimantai

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Trekking in Hachimantai

Incredible alpine flora scenery can be found in this Tohoku trekking wonderland

Hachimantai DMO Inc.

Towada-Hachimantai National Park is an expansive national park stretching between Iwate, Aomori, and Akita. Yet even among this large stretch of the land reserve, the Hachimantai portion is well known nationally as an unbeatable trekking destination.

Dicentra flowers, skunk cabbage, and various mountain herbs fresh with rainy dew are just a few examples of the amazing alpine flora waiting to be discovered from spring all the way through fall, and you’ll start seeing it just a short walk away from the parking lot, so even beginners and light trekkers will enjoy themselves.

Furthermore, from April to October, the Hachimantai Sansaku Bus runs between Morioka Station and Mount Hachimantai’s summit, and employs nature guides that will give you a tour around the summit for free.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station (about 2 hours 15 minutes). From Morioka Station, take a Northern Iwate Transportation bus bound for Hachimantai-chojo and ride to the Sakura Koen-mae bus stop (about 1 hour 30 minutes).
