Hiroshima Kagura Resumes Regular Performance in 2022!

Kagura is one of the traditional Japanese performing arts that used to be dedicated to gods as thanks for a plentiful harvest in early times. Throughout its history from ancient times to the present, many different styles of Kagura have been developed in different areas across the country, mixing with local cultures.

Hiroshima Kagura is said to have its roots in neighboring Shimane Prefecture, and was later introduced and developed in the Geihoku region of Hiroshima. In autumn, Kagura is performed at shrines throughout the prefecture to pray for a plentiful harvest.

In 2017, Hiroshima Kagura came into the limelight, as it was performed in KENZO's Spring/Summer 2018 collection in Paris, enlivening the ambience of the collection with its unique visuals and the rhythm of its performance.

There are regular performances of Kagura in Hiroshima City, which take place every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. through December 21. The venue, Hiroshima Prefectural Citizen’s Culture Center, is a 3-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, making it easily accessible for tourists.

Characterized by flamboyant costumes as well as music with Japanese drums and flutes, not to mention magnificent, dynamic dancing, Hiroshima Kagura will give you an exciting experience unique to this region.
